  1. The United States was not justified in dropping the atom bomb because the civilian casualties to Japan were huge, the effects of the radiation lasted years to come, and the aggressive display of nuclear power would be a leading factor to the arms race during the Cold War.

  5. Since the death toll could have easily exceeded the toll at Hiroshima and Nagasaki just by launching an attack on Japan's shores and having slowly run out of options, the United States had jurisdiction for dropping the atomic bombs and saving some time that the Soviet Union could have used in trying to make claims on Japan's current occupied territory.

  11. The United States was justified for dropping the Atomic Bomb because, President Truman stated that the Atomic bombs were dropped at Hiroshima and Nagasaki,to end the war with Japan and to save the lives of American soldiers. He told the American people that an invasion of Japan could have cost between 500,000 and 1,000,000 casualties, and to not use the bomb, would cause a huge loss of American lives. The atomic bomb they believed was the best solution.

You are off to a good start. You can find a lot of good information from these examples for your project!

    My suggestions are:
make "bomb" plural (there were two)
"civilian casualties to Japan were huge" replace "huge" with a statistic
"lasted years to come" if you can find data on this, use it (how many years?
    Put a semicolon after "because"

You have original points, that is really good!
    My suggestion are:

The United States was unjustified in dropping the atomic bombs on Japanese cities. As a result of the bombings the Japanese government paid over four trillion yen to reconstruct the cities destroyed in the explosions (plural), Japan did not possess nuclear capabilities which made self defense futile, and the United States government ignored its own scientists who warned about the lasting destructive capabilities of the atomic bombs.

You have a lot of good examples to base a project on! -Mairs

The United States was unjustified for dropping the atomic bomb on Japan because it killed innocent people including men, women, and children, radiation from the bomb damage crops and land for years to come, and destroyed the lives of many innocent families.

    My suggestion are:
"unjustified for dropping the atomic bomb"
    change "for" to in
make "bomb" bombs (plural, there were two dropped)
"it killed innocent people including men, women, and children"
try: the bombings were responsible for the deaths of (#/statistic here) civilians

"radiation from the bomb damage crops and land for years to come" bombs (plural)
give me a statistic if you can find one, how many years? how much damage?

"destroyed the lives of many innocent families"
replace this with a new reason (you've already used this)
consider: immoral stance here (burned children, families devastated, etc)

You have excellent examples to base your project on. Good start!

    My suggestions are:
make sure you keep bomb plural (bombs, there were two dropped)

either include Hiroshima with Nagasaki, just say Japan, or discuss it separately, but do not forget to include it!

    Try:
The United States was not justified in dropping the atomic bombs on Japan because; radiation and gas clouds resulted in the death of (give statistic here, how many civilians were killed?) innocent civilians, Japan's environment was affected for (give statistics here; how many years? what types of effects?), and the display of force led the Soviet Union to compete in an arms race with the United States following the war.

  21. Dustin & Blakely,

This is an excellent start, but you have one giant run on sentence here. I suggest fixing it as follows:

The United States was justified in dropping the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. Experts estimated that a land attack on Japan would result in over one million casualties (you will need to provide sources in your project to back this claim), the bombings established U.S. authority in the region which halted Soviet claims to territory occupied by Japan during the war, and (you need a third reason here. I suggest its assertion of the U.S. as a world power in an era of imperialism and reconstruction)

See me if you need help. With these topics, you can find good info for your project! -Mairs

  22. Lauren & Tarah,

Okay, this is a great start and your topics are good, you just have grammar errors. Make sure you proof read your submission out loud for flow, this will prevent simple errors.

    My suggestions:

The United States was justified in dropping the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki because; the action put a quick end to the war and saved the lives of Japanese and Americans, a land attack would have forced the United States to borrow money to continue its war efforts (make sure you can prove this), and the show of force surpassed the effects of Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor, acting as a warning to other countries vying for power.

  23. Neda & Claire,

The United States was not justified in dropping the atom bomb because about 140,000 innocent people died, it cost the United States billions of dollars, and left Hiroshima and Nagasaki radioactive for many years after.

This is a solid and clean draft. The topics you mention will be easily researched and discussed in your project.
    My suggestion are:

"atom bomb " make this plural-bombs (we dropped 2)
add on Japan (where did we drop the atomic bombs?)

"about 140,000 innocent people died" check this statistic and add injured people as well. Remove "about", there is a solid number

"left Hiroshima and Nagasaki radioactive for many years after."
    add: the bombings
give a statistic for "for many years" how many years?

    Excellent start! -Mairs

During World War II, the U.S. decision to drop the atomic bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki was one of the most controversial decisions in U.S. history. The actions of President Truman were justified on the basis that total war had broken out, as evidenced by Japan's surprise attack on the U.S. and fire bombings over Tokyo that were claiming thousands of civilian lives. Ultimately, the atomic bombs ended the war by destroying Japanese cities and killing citizens, forcing Japan to surrender unconditionally.

The United States was justified in dropping the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki because it put an end to the war, saved an estimated one million American military and civilian lives, and displayed the militiristic might of the United States.

  73. Yui & Brenda,

Well done! I made few small changes to help it to flow better:

The United States was not justified in dropping the atomic bombs on Japan because they caused unmeasurable problems for the environment, Japan was losing the war, so there was no need, and it killed an estimated 200,000 innocent people, including those that were affected by radiation.

  74. Brianna & Shannon,

Excellent thesis. I made the following changes for flow:

The United States was not justified in the dropping the atomic bombs on Japan in World War II. An estimated 200,000 innocent Japanese civilians became victims, it cost the United States billions of dollars, and it affected Japan's environment or many years to come.

  75. Adam & Justin,

Good start! I made a few adjustments as follows. Also, you only provided one reason, you need three total.

The United States' decision to drop the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki was justified because it was the only way to end the war without sacrificing the lives of millions of Americans and Japanese through the invasion of Japan (you need two more reasons...)

  76. Kyler & Gabi,

Good start! I made the following changes:

The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in World War II were justifiable. The actions saved an estimated one million American and Japanese lives, it ended the war in the Pacific and led to the surrender of Japan to the United States, and the bombings showed the USSR that the United States was a Super Power.

  77. Ashlee & Camille,

Nice start. I made some changes that will help it to read better:

American was justified in it's dropping of the atomic bombs on Japan in World War II. Japan had shown it's intension to continue a war of attrition, the bombings saved an estimated one million American and Japanese lives, and (you need one more concrete detail...).

  79. Jayme,

Thank you for re-posting a thesis. I appreciate your prompt response to my concerns and I ma glad that we cleared the issue up. I made a few changes as follows:

The use of the atomic bombs on Japan in World War II was unjustified. The action brought the Soviet Union into an arms race with the United States that led to the Cold War, it killed 200,000 innocent Japanese civilians, and it caused damage to Japan's cities and land that would affect the country for generations.

    I hope this helps!

The United States was not justified in dropping the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki becuase it was a crime against humanity in killing 200,000 innocent japanese civilians, the U.S. government had not thoroughly tested the magnitude and effects of radiation from the atomic bomb, and The U.S. government was not aware of how lethal the atomic bomb would manifest.

  81. The United States was definitely justified for using the Atomic bombs on both, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, simply on obvious factors. First of which, is to save the lives of not only our hard fighting American soldiers, but the vicious enemy, the Japanese. Which is estimated to of saved nearly half a million of combined deaths for both American and Japanese soldiers/civilians.
Second of, the Japanese had no issue with bombing our largest naval fleet which was located in Pearl Harbor, land full of American and military personnel. Third off, people seem to forget about our on edge friend, the Soviets, us Americans needed to show our power to the Soviets so they wouldn't think about attacking American soil like the Japanese.
